Microdermabrasion is one of the recent skin-care techniques having crossed over from Hollywood. It is also said that it could be an effective alternative to more expensive and invasive resurfacing treatments such as plastic surgery, chemical peels and Botox.

Microdermabrasion –Iron out your facial lines!Microdermabrasion, sometimes known as ‘microderm’ is a procedure for rejuvenating your skin. The procedure uses very unique microcrystals to gently yet intensely exfoliate your face, getting rid of all the dead skin cells and allowing new ones to grow. And this will result in a glowing, healthy looking skin. The procedure itself is painless and non-invasive.

Microdermabrasion is also called lunchtime peel, Parisian Peel or Diamond Peel.

Benefits of microdermabrasion

The procedure works well for improving conditions such as sun damage, fine lines, age spots, acne and superficial scarring. Though face is the common area for microdermabrasion, the treatment may include neck, chest and back.

Microdermabrasion is very popular among  teenagers as the procedure helps control and lessen outbreaks of acne.

If you are one of those who spend a lot of time in the sun and never bother with sunscreen, microdermabrasion is the treatment for you.

Despite taking extremely good care of your skin, with age, all of us end up developing crow’s feet around our eyes or feathers around our lips or creases on our forehead. Microdermabrasion, which is a quick, painless procedure, can get rid of all these unwanted lines on your face, leaving you with young, supple skin.

Mostly, microdermabrasion is done in day spas, medical spas or by skin care specialists. The results are much better than the home microdermabrasion kit, which is basically a scrub for the face. Therefore, a visit to a specialist is recommended.

Things to keep in mind before microdermabrasion

Dark skin: Selection of the patient is very crucial for this microdermabrasion therapy. As there can be a slight darkening of skin post treatment, it is not very highly recommended for patients with dark skin.

Superficial scars: It is the suggested line of treatment modality for superficial scars (as very mild trauma happens to the skin during the treatment). For proper and complete treatment of deep scars, microdermabrasion has to be done in combination with other forms of procedures.

Keep out of sun: Post-operative care plays a very important and significant role in getting the maximum results from this treatment. Ensure that the patient does not get direct sun exposure for a while after getting the microdermabrasion treatment. Sunscreen application is mandatory after this procedure.

Repeated sittings: Though the results of the microdermabrasion treatment are not very great as it is a very superficial procedure, but repeated settings can help.

Expert care: Make sure that the spa or clinic which provides microdermabrasion has the necessary credentials. The treatment result depends on their expertise. If the clinic does not have trained personnel, you might end up with abrasions and sometimes pin-point bleeding.

Sensitive skin: If you have extremely sensitive skin or suffer from diabetes or vascular conditions such as skin inflammation, bacterial infections, cuts or have got Botox done recently (within 72 hours), microdermabrasion is not for you.
